Hi there! Absolutely loving your work - I think it’s fair to say that your perspective on tactic building is unique in the community. Though seemingly simplified compared to the recreations that include a thousand-and-one instructions, it’s been so clarifying reading your posts and has helped me understand how tactics work in relation to the match engine enormously - and I’ve played FM religiously for the past 15 years!

One question I do have is how you would approach changes to player positions/roles when deploying a different formation, while still employing the same tactical style and instructions. For example, would this playing style still work when deployed as a 3-5-2 or a 4-3-3?

If I was being selfish, I’d love to see how you would interpret Julian Nagelsmann in FM, particularly as he’s so adaptable and impressive across a number of formations. Other young managers such as Fabregas, Hoeneß, Iraola and Hurzeler would be very interesting to read too!

Keep up the great work!

Thank you very much. Appreciate the kind words!

All of the same principles apply, regardless of the formation. Choose a Team Mentality/Duties which balance Individual Mentalities across the team, then select specific roles based upon player profiles.

I did do a Twitter thread on Nagelsmann's Germany last year:

Nagelsmann is actually quite a tactically flexible coach and has played a few different systems but I loved his 3-5-2 at Hoffenheim.

Thanks for coming back to me - just read your thread on team mentalities alongside this. Would be very interested to know why you chose the balanced mentality for Nagelsmann, and then how you go about choosing mentalities more broadly when setting up a new tactic.

Am also intrigued how you would set about creating a tactical style for players with a lower footballing IQ, typically at lower half teams or those in lower divisions. Would you also go about creating a tactic that is more structured, rather than those that are fluid, and player roles with more hard-coded instructions? Thanks!

You're welcome. In Nagelsmann's case, I wanted to use Attacking duties to create some depth between the 3x AMs. If I am using Attacking duties then I will use a Balanced mentality to balance the individual mentalities out.

Regarding the lower clubs, check the post about 10 Tips to Improve at Football Manager 2024; I will address this in more detail in the next post but that is exactly where I would start 👍
